Description
Introduction that I wrote about Sammi G. in 2019: Sammi G is a DJ from Los Angeles, California. I discovered @sammi.g_ in September when browsing the #girldjs tag. Saw her cutting up Pharcyde’s “Drop”, lurked her page, & was jamming along to her dope mixes. She’s flyyyy! I was instantly drawn to her scratch skills, beatmatching, juggling, strong business mindset, & bomb taste in hip hop (FYI, she lists albums like Little Brother’s The Minstrel Show, J Dilla’s The Shining, ATCQ’s Midnight Marauders, & Black Star’s title album as being influential & personal all-time faves). She’s a boss on the tables & behind them! // Sammi G has been involved with music for 10 years, earning titles of being an event coordinator, concert producer & promoter, & a music journalist at BREAL.TV (’15-’17). Between that, she graduated with an Audio Production degree (’15). She began to make a name for herself as a DJ in mid-2017 when she held her first event at Classic Era LA, called R&(BBQ), which further fueled her passion to DJ. Soon after, Sammi attended the Beat Junkie Institute of Sound (BJIOS, @beatjunkieios), a DJ center & training school, where she fell in love with the art of scratch, developed her techniques on the 1s & 2s, & soaked up knowledge from mentors. She got to perform in the NAMM 2019 showroom at the BJIOS / Rane booth, & was also one of the first students to graduate! She’s been rocking hella events this year, including Soulection, Flygrls, Gossip Grill, Sam’s Club (named after herself 😆) & more. Aside from all that, she also works at BJIOS as a marketing rep, & even co-founded their women’s subdivision, called Ladies of Sound, along with founder Maricel Sison! Through the @ladiesofsound.la platform, Sammi helps to support, showcase, educate & train girls + women within the DJ community by way of hosting unique panels, Q&A’s, parties, workshops, & scratch sessions. Doing the DAMN thing, inspiring the future generation of women in the DJ community! Congrats to LoS for winning the 2019 We Be Rare Foundation grant, too. For real, if you can’t catch her cutting records live, go stream her mixes, peep her spinning on her page, & get familiar!
FYI: Sammi has been cutting & grooving doing a bunch of lives sets, online events, & more in the last year. She’s dropping a mix project on February 14th, under the alias Midi Ripperton. Be sure to follow her for updates!
