Description
Introduction that I wrote about Mahogany Jones in 2019: Mahogany Jones, an emcee from Mt. Vernon, New York. My introduction to @mahoganyjonz occured 2 years ago when I saw the “Bring Back the Soul” vid, from her 2016 album, titled Sugar Water. The whole album is DOPE. Mahogany is a lyrical wordsmith with verbal dexterity, a catchy flow, an ability to manipulate metaphors, a knack for storytelling, & an ability to move people with emotion-evoking songwriting. Equipped with honesty, spirituality, a mission to empower, & a sense of awareness, she delivers powerful messages about relevant social issues, internal battles, not being afraid of change, chasing dreams, music’s impact, & more. She’s also no stranger to letting her sharp tongue verbally assault challengers. ↪️ Her path to hip hop began in ’96 when she took her poetry to the stage, performing spoken word in small Brooklyn cafes. Her music career kicked off 4 years later, honing her craft as a freestyler & became the first 4x undefeated champ at BET’s 106 & Park Freestyle Fridays in ’01. Following that, she moved to Detroit, appeared on 30+ projects, & released her debut album, titled Morphed, in ’08. Mahogany is also an arts advocate, community activist, & educator. She toured internationally as a Hip Hop Ambassador, representing the nation, which found her headlining in over 15 countries, teaching workshops with local artists, performing at schools, teaching hip hop theater, & even performed for the VP of Zambia. She was a facilitator for Inside Out, an instructor with Detroit Institute of Musical Education, & lead facilitator for Detroit’s The Yuinion. Along with her 2014 album, titled PURE, she launched A Pure Movement, which empowered women/girls, & also confronted violence against women. Last year, she spoke at TEDxDetroit, giving a motivating speech about pursuing the impossible through Cardi B-related life lessons. In ’18, she won the Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Rap MC. She’s working on NEW MUSIC now, so give her a follow!
FYI: Mahogany Jones has released more new music since I last wrote this intro, which would be her latest album, titled Floating.
